Top Five Tips For A Greener Christmas

Being an Eco conscious person and a lover of nature I want to share with you five top tips that will ensure your local land fill is left wanting this Christmas! Here we go and remember have fun!!!

 1- Christmas Tree - Lets start with the Christmas tree - some people prefer a real Christmas tree while others prefer an artificial one. Which ever one you like, remember the natural one is the most biodegradable. I was surprised to read recently that you can replant the used Christmas tree in your garden to use again the next year, I don't know how well this would work as I haven't tried it. If you opt for a real one make sure it has been sourced from a sustainable forest.



2- Christmas baubles - Everyone likes the shine and glitter of new Christmas baubles but lets consider if we really need to go out and buy new ones this year. Dust down last years supply and save some money and the environment. You can make some really nice homemade decorations for the tree eg. cinnamon sticks tied together with some fine red ribbon - delightful aroma! So not only do they look good but the smell is wonderful as well. With a little imagination you can create some interesting pieces for Christmas. Another example is to make your own holly wreath for your front door. Simply get a piece of wire ( an old wire coat hanger will do) make it into a circle and go foraging in nature for your holly, pine cones, ivy and leaves from conifers. Get the family involved and enjoy!

3 - Wrapping paper - We all love to give and indeed receive presents that are nicely wrapped. Lets make an effort this Christmas and instead of buying the traditional brightly coloured Christmas paper lets try wrapping our presents in brown recycled paper and add a gorgeous red satin ribbon or whatever colour of ribbon you prefer. It immediately looks like you have made an effort  - which in fact you have and people will be more inclined to follow the recycle principle! Just think - you wont have black bulging waste sacks piled up outside your home - because lets face it  -the amount of packaging waste we accumulate over Christmas is huge.

4- Shopping -There are lots of ways we can be environmentally aware when it comes to shopping. The first thing I think of is the shopping bag! Plastic bags will hopefully become a thing of the past but not without a huge effort on our part. I have a few organic bags that I take with me when shopping. I believe every little helps. When I go grocery shopping I have reusable grocery bags which work a treat - The Sainsbury's of this world need to be given a clear message that the packaging they put on food is utterly ridiculous. We don't need our cucumber to be wrapped in plastic,  If your budget allows, buy organic and fair trade products. You are not only buying food free from chemicals but you are supporting the farmers who get a decent wage and a fair market price for their produce.


5 - Christmas cards - Just thinking about alternatives and the savings that could be made - don't think Royal Mail would be a big fan of thinking about alternatives! Think of the rain forest how much of it is used for our consumerism? I have come up with the following suggestions - an ecard, home made Christmas card, special Christmas text and if you do send shop bought Christmas cards then it would be great to put them in a recycle bank straight after Christmas.

This concludes my Top Five Tips for a Greener Christmas and remember every little helps and just being that little bit more aware of the consequences of our actions. Most importantly whatever you get up to have fun and plenty of 'craic' over the festive period.

The first round of judging saw the 302 entries whittled down to just 
8-11 entries per category, before the second round of judging took

Organic makeup and spray tan

For all you girls out there who want to make the switch to organic make up and cosmetics!

This is an area that is gaining in popularity as more and more information becomes available about the ingredients of conventional make up and their unwanted effects. I have long been an advocate of organic makeup and cosmetics because I have quite sensitive skin and I would find the skin on my face in particular flaring up when I would put on any type of foundation or moisturizer. The same effect would happen in the shower, so in the end I just switched to all natural products.


Vita Liberata Spray Tan - Paraben Free
I have just started using Vita Liberata spray tan and let me tell you I honestly think it is brilliant. I do need to tell you however that in the PR blurb it says that you can get your tan and immediately go about your activities, well from my experience I leave it until late evening - get it done and then go to bed and wash it off the following morning. Again I am being brutally honest here, the sheets do get a fair amount of residue on them but it washes out, no problem.

Inka make up is another brand of makup that I use, it is very similar to bare minerals.It is very light and if feels totally natural on your face.

Shampoo and conditioner can be a bit of a hit and miss affair. I used to use Avalon products but I found these to be very drying, so recently I have switched to Dr Organics. This range can be found in Holland and Barret's. Dr Organics  has a variety of products to choose from. I use their soap, shampoo and conditioner. I love their soap, especially the vitamin e, lavender, pomegranate and the tea tree selection! It is a bit more expensive but I think it is worth it - to get a product free from toxic chemicals

Sometimes it's hard to know how to trust a cosmetic label.

You need to be careful when selecting your product because sometimes the label is like reading double dutch!For example Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, a foaming ingredient (surfactant), is "derived from" coconut, yet it is a toxic ingredient known to cause severe skin irritations.    

I would like to take a moment and talk about the use of parabens in cosmetics. It is a controversial issue, as some studies have suggested that they are potentially highly dangerous. Research has shown a possible link to breast cancer, although not enough is currently known about this connection to draw any conclusive links, but parabens are definitely a worry for many people, especially as they are found in almost all of our everyday cosmetics and toiletries.

What are Parabens?

Parabens are used in cosmetics as preservatives to lengthen the shelf life of products. They can be found in a range of different toiletries and cosmetics, including shampoo, conditioner, facial cleanser, fake tan, toothpaste and deodorant. They are effective preservatives and cost little to use, which is why they can be found in so many products. It was previously thought that parabens were safe to use as they contain very few toxic chemicals, and allergic reactions to them are rare. However, recent studies have raised doubts as to whether this really is the case.

Why Are They so Controversial?

The use of parabens in cosmetics has attracted widespread concern in recent times, mainly as a result of studies linking it to breast cancer. Parabens were found in samples of breast tumours of breast cancer patients.This information is of particular importance to me as I battled breast cancer last year and I ensure all my deodrants are paraben free. It can be difficult however to get a natural deodorant that is effective as the conventional ones. Again its trial and error and I have found that a particular one will work fine for a couple of months and then suddenly not be as effective as it was.

What are the Alternatives?

At this stage, you may well be wanting to know of the alternative options to parabens. Avoiding them is not as easy as you might think, as they can be found in virtually any of the cosmetics and toiletries that are currently lurking in your bathroom cabinet. However, there are other options, and several companies are now offering parabens-free cosmetics and toiletries (particularly deodorants). You may have to pay a bit extra for these, but it will usually be worth it if you are concerned. If you are worried about the possible effects of parabens on your general health, you are not alone. Even though the links to conditions such as cancer are not yet fully proven, experts have advised against using products that are known to contain parabens, and to look for alternative products instead. These are expected to become increasingly popular as people become more aware of the health problems associated with the use of parabens in cosmetics.

This week the digimums caught up with lovely mumpreneur Jacqueline Irvine from Newry; mum to two girls and owner of Organic Baby Clothes Direct an online business.

Tell us a little about yourself and your family

I am the founder and owner of an ethical website called Organic Baby Clothes Direct it is the trading name of Gorgeous Eco Baby. I supply organic baby clothes and accessories and I went live to the public in March 2010. I offer a fabulous range of organic clothes and accessories for children 0-6yrs. I am passionate about giving parents the choice of organic natural fabrics, free from toxic, petroleum based chemicals for their precious babies.

This service is intended to make shopping for organic baby clothes easy, enabling customers to live a healthier lifestyle. I am 46yrs young and have been married to my husband Pat who is my best friend and confidant for 23yrs. He is an airline pilot and I have two wonderful daughters, Stephanie who is 14yrs and Victoria who is 12yrs. We live a healthy organic lifestyle, taking part in lots of outdoor activities including, cycling, walking, gliding, golfing  and mountain climbing and living in such close proximity to the Mournes we are spoilt for choice. In fact 6 weeks after completing a course of radiation for breast cancer last year I climbed Slieve Donard for the charity cancer centre in Belfast.

What did you do before you started the business?

My employment background is in Nursing and Clinical Research. I made a decision to give up paid employment until the girls had completed their primary school education. So early last year 2009 my plans to set up my own business were well underway, when totally unexpectedly they took a direct hit – I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The most amazing thing was I never at any stage thought ‘why me’ or ‘poor me’. I got the diagnosis and immediately I began to focus on getting the operation, getting the treatment started so I could be well again to complete what I had started  - setting up and running my own business. That is exactly what I did. I stayed positive and focused on my goal.

What was your inspiration for starting up your own business?

It sounds really cliché but I have always wanted to start up my own business but to be honest I never had the inner confidence you need to execute such a task. Going through the journey last year made me realise that I possess a core inner strength that makes me feel quite humble and grateful. I honestly believe that I can do anything I want to do if I focus my energy on it.

What did you have to do to get your business up and running?

Once I made the decision to start my business I enrolled for the Go For It Programme with Invest NI. This gave me an overall insight into the setting up process and I found this enlightening and helped build my confidence as well. I think the most important thing I did was to join The Federation of Small Businesses. This gave me access to free banking which is fantastic for new start ups.

What support did you get then and what, if any, support do you get now?

Most of my support came from my family. One bank told told me they would not be interested in my business because it was too high risk, yet the Federation of Small Businesses can provide banking through the co-operative bank for free.

How do you balance running a successful business and family life?

I work from home so I am available for my girls when they need me. My husband’s job can take him away sometimes but the variety in our lives I find quite stimulating. I don’t like routine much; I have always been quite an impulsive person.

What is your routine of an average day e.g. from what time you get up, what you do before you leave in the morning to a day in the business?

I get up at 7am and drive the girls to school at 8.15. After I check my emails, I process my orders and dispatch them. This is followed by ordering, checking with suppliers and updating my website, not to mention the social media side of things which is essential. If my husband is at home we will go for a 10mile cycle on the tow path. We would do this 4 times a week. Then it’s time to get the girls from school. Dinner is usually around 6pm and we have a family meal. I buy as much organic produce as I can. I am back on the computer again for another hour, checking on my competitors and looking at my own stats etc. Bedtime is around 10pm

How do you market your business?

I have used press releases, baby magazines, glossy magazines such as The Ulster Tatler, actually I have an 80 word editorial and advertisement in the August edition. I am planning to go to a few baby shows and an Eco show this year so that will also help the marketing campaign. Social Media is essential when running a business, so it requires attention as well.

What has been your biggest success so far?

Although I have only been trading a short while I have enjoyed recent success by winning ‘The Best Green Business’ in the Greater Newry Area Awards 2010. Just to make it sweeter I beat Sainsbury’s! It felt great to have been nominated; I never thought I would win so I was ecstatic when they called out my name. It was a fantastic evening with over 400 people in attendance. I was very proud to receive the award. I have also been nominated for Best Green Business in the Mumpreneur Awards 2010, the shortlist will be announced at the end of July and the finals are scheduled for September2010, so fingers crossed for that as well.  I am also in with the chance of winning ’The Most Inspirational Mumpreneur’. This takes place in Warwickshire England.

What advice would you give to other mums thinking of starting up a business?

The one piece of advice I would give other mum’s thinking of starting up a business is to believe in yourself. When you truly believe in yourself you can accomplish whatever you desire. Surround yourself with positive people and give negative people a wide berth. Think abundance and live in a state of gratitude and good things will come your way. I think that is three things!

What do you do to relax and unwind after a hard working week?

I don’t wait till the end of the week to relax and unwind. I continually work, exercise and play in the course of a day, this is the way I live. Friday night is usually cinema night, and we like to eat out and of course I like an occasional glass of wine. Catching up with friends is fun and most importantly of all I take time out to meditate each day. This is very calming for the soul and helps with the clarity of your mind.

Cheryl Sloan, marketing director of the Fair trade Foundation, said: "It is very encouraging that UK consumers continue to be very receptive to Fair trade and show high levels of awareness, familiarity and purchasing.

A survey of 1,500 people by the Fairtrade Foundation also found that one in three shoppers were likely to give business to companies for being socially responsible.
Almost nine out of 10 of those questioned said they expected workers in developing countries to receive fair pay and conditions.

Women were more likely to be motivated by feelings of doing good when they bought products, said the report, adding that the Fairtrade mark came top as the most trusted certification label.

"Fairtrade is clearly no longer a fringe sector within retail, but companies should also take note that shoppers are prepared to send a very strong message to them about their global accountability."
More than half of those surveyed expressed concern about human rights, poverty in developing countries and worker exploitation.
